This probably doesn’t really work but it just might. Please turn on the captions to read about the photo.
The magnets are N42 0.5 inch by 0.25 inch neodymium magnets from K&J Magnetics. There are 8 on each side with the south ends joined in the center by being attracted to a 3/4 inch steel nut.
This makes a stack of magnets with a north pole at each end.
They are on a Styrofoam disc and placed in some relatively still water.
They move towards earth’s magnetic south pole at a rate of about 1 inch in 10 minutes. (It is too slow to make a video of but we recommend others try this out.)
At first when they are moved into position in the water they go south more quickly and then gradually slow down considerably.
This might be a dead end but we haven’t seen it attempted by anyone else.
Might magnetic shielding in around the steel nut make it work better?

Now thinking this might actually work and could be advanced with three square magnets in a Halbach Array.
